A "talking prescription bottle" that plays back dosage instructions read into a recording device in the bottle's base has gone on sale in the US.
Rex the Talking Bottle, produced by MedivoxRx Technologies, was developed to reduce prescription dosage mixups by recording and repeating patient instructions. Patients, caregivers or pharmacists can record directions into the bottle's recording/playback device using an accompanying recording station. When it's time to take their pills, patients press a button and find out what's in the bottle and how much and when to take it.
The latest development for Rex captures the information going from the prescription label from the pharmacy computer and simultaneously converts that information into speech and records it to the bottle, making sure the pharmacist doesn't accidentally type one thing onto the label and speak something different when recording.
The bottle and recorder kit retails for approximately US$50. It is not known whether the product is available for sale in Australia.
